How to Create a Natural Glow That Looks Good On and Off Camera

Posted on 26/03/202626/03/2026 by Ondo

It can be quite challenging to create a ‘natural glow’ makeup look that still stands out on camera. This task was much simpler when full glam makeup was on trend, as that look easily translated well both on and off camera. After applying makeup, it is only natural to check how it looks in the mirror; the reflection might appear perfect. However, as soon as a camera is introduced, it can look completely different, as if no makeup is being worn. This guide will go through how to achieve a ‘natural glow’ look that looks as good on camera as it does in the mirror.

Start With Prep

A strong makeup look always starts with strong skin preparation. Well-prepped skin reflects the light better, this is because dehydrated skin tends to absorb the light instead of reflecting it. The key steps to strong prep start with exfoliating for a smooth base, which helps reflect the light clearly. Next, go in with a hydrating moisturiser, one which includes SPF in the formula is perfect. Finally, to add extra glow and help your makeup last all day long, go in with a dewy or illuminating primer.

Lightweight Base

For the base, it is recommended to use a light-to-medium foundation, which is easily buildable to create an even tone all over, but doesn’t create cakiness on camera. Rather than using a thick foundation to cover blemishes, instead use concealer strategically to create coverage but without the heaviness. Concealer can also be used to brighten the under-eye. To prevent the product from settling into creases, apply the product underneath the darker circle and disperse downwards and outwards, once blended, then begin to blend the product to the eyeline. Leave the concealer to set, then just before setting, go in with the brush again to smooth out any buildup in the creases.

Add Warmth

To bring the colour back into your face, cream bronzer is the perfect product; it is easily blendable to create natural dimension. Apply the bronzer to all the points on your face which naturally tan more from the sun, such as your cheekbones, temples and top of your nose. Using the creamed version of bronzer creates a more skin-like finish to mimic a natural tan on and off camera. However, sometimes it isn’t enough for the camera, especially if you like a more bronzey look. You can go in with a small layer of powdered bronzer to add a little extra definition.

Finish With a Gloss

The final step to complete the look is adding a layer of hydrating lip gloss. To keep the natural look, opt for a colour which is similar to your natural colour. The gloss reflects really nicely, enhancing the natural shape of your lips on and off camera. If you want to add more definition to the lips, you can softly outline your lips before applying gloss.

Final Tips

Whilst applying your makeup, be sure to check how it is looking in both the mirror and camera, to avoid getting to the end and realising it doesn’t look how you want it to on camera. This also includes checking how it looks with any lighting you might be using. Be sure to use setting powder in any areas where there might be excess oil, because this will reflect poorly on camera; you want the look to be glowing, not greasy.
