In June 1989, after the crisis in the Chinese government which led to bloody clashes between students and Chinese authorities in Tiananmen Square, Jiang Zemin joined the Standing Committee of the Politburo and was elected Secretary-General of the Party Communist Chinese, position in which he replaced Zhao Ziyang. Its situation was not very stable, since it did not count on the affection of the military dome and its power depended almost exclusively of the support that offered him Deng Xiaoping.
